Submit your answers to the reflection questions.
You will address the following questions based on the chapter reading, and modular content above (PowerPoint, Video, Articles):
- The video “What is perception” notes that perception is becoming aware of something through our senses. What does this mean to you and how does this compare to the process noted in our text that perception is about selection of information, organization, and interpretation of information, influenced through negotiation? Explain your answers including references to our text to and the video to emphasize your points.
- In the article “Eight Ways Your Perception of Reality is Skewed,” choose two of the ways noted that interest you and address the following questions. What about each of these did you find most interesting? Why?
- Our text discusses common tendencies in perception (attribution, stereotyping, primacy effect, halo effect, horn effect, confirmation bias, self-serving bias, fundamental attribution error, etc.). Based on your own reflection, which 3 of the tendencies do you find you do the most? Explain with specific examples. For example, if you find that you find that most people are good, is halo effect functioning and why might this be a hinderance to your own relationships?
- Using recommendations noted in our textbook on pages 139-144, what goals or tools might you use to improve your own communication and awareness around perception? Explain using the concepts theories noted in our text.
Answers should be written in paragraph format. I am interested in your own thoughts and ideas. Consider including connections to course material to further justify your points.“Why don’t you see what I mean?” is a common phrase people use during an argument. We say things like this because we tend to wrap messages around our own perception or view of the world. However, when it comes to communication breakdown in relationships, someone’s perception of a situation is usually not what is actually happening. In this article, we take a deep dive into how perception affects communication and list effective tips on how we can improve our perception for better communication in all areas of life (Sambursky, 2020). https://www.endominance.com/blog/2020/07/03/do-you-see-what-i-mean-how-perception-affects-communication-in-relationships/
