Talking/listening journal

Overview

After completing today's readings and learning activities, write a reflective journal (250–500 words or more, if necessary) addressing the prompts below. Your journal should demonstrate your understanding of the listening concepts discussed in this chapter while connecting them to your own experiences.

How would you evaluate your listening skills? What evidence from your personal or professional experiences supports your assessment?

What do you consider to be your greatest strengths as a listener?

In what areas could your listening skills improve?

Are there particular environments (such as busy workplaces, classrooms, family gatherings, or virtual meetings) where listening is more challenging for you? Why?

Think about situations or individuals you find more difficult to listen to or understand. What factors make communication more challenging in those interactions?

Recall a time when you felt someone heard your words but was not fully engaged in the conversation. How did that experience affect your feelings, your willingness to communicate, or the overall interaction?

Based on what you learned this week, identify one or two specific strategies you can use to become a more mindful and effective listener in your everyday interactions.
