Description
Part One (in 550 words or more)
- Describe the distinction made between professionalism and ethics in PPT 12 and provide an example of an action in health care that would be described as unprofessional to do (whether or not it is an ethical issue) in health care and an action that would be considered professional to do (whether or not it is an ethical issue) in health care. (Remember, professionalism includes ethics but is not limited to it.)
- From PPT 13, what is a virtue (be detail here, meaning don't just write one sentence) and why would an understanding of virtue ethics (or just understanding what virtues are) be vital for professionalism in medicine/health care.
- View PPT 14 describe what the 3 functions of HIPAA are (make sure you explain the 2 meanings of portability in HIPAA) ? What is protected by HIPAA?
- First view the Universal Upset Patient Protocol link and the Professional Boundaries link under Online Lectures. Then answer the following questions:
- Describe and explain in your own words the 6 steps of the Universal Upset Patient Protocol.
- Describe and explain in your own words the difference between boundary crossing and boundary violation. [Keep in mind that there is generally nothing wrong with a boundary crossing.]
E. View PPTs 16a and 16b. First, describe in your own words the following concepts: moral patient, moral agent, human being, and person. (As you describe these concepts, make sure you explain how they are all different from each other.) Secondly, in your own words, describe the following terms: IVF, ICSI, GIFT, and ZIFT. Then determine, between a GIFT and a ZIFT, which of these 2 infertility procedures a pro-life proponent would choose for ethical reasons. Thirdly, in your own words, describe the difference between traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy. Fourthly, describe in your own words either Judith Jarvis Thomson’s view or Mary Ann Warren’s view on the topic of an abortion, i.e., do they think all or some abortions are ethically permissible? As you describe their view, make sure you construct in your own words the argument they present for their view. i.e., present premises and conclusions for their arguments. Do you agree with their argument? Fifthly, describe John Noonan’s view or Don Marquis’ view on the topic of an abortion, i.e., do they think all or some abortions are ethically permissible? As you describe their view, make sure you construct in your own words the argument they present for their view. Finally, do you agree with their argument?
Part Two: (In 350 words or more)
- Describe a situation at work where you had a conflict with a patient or with another healthcare provider (if you have no healthcare experience then choose someone at work or some other setting) who was very difficult to deal with. By difficult, I mean a person who was emotionally worked up and unwilling to see how he/she was contributing to the problem. How would you use the UUPP to respond to this person?
- Describe a situation in health care where you participated in a boundary crossing and a situation where you were guilty of a boundary violation. As far as the boundary violation, explain how you would handle the situation now. Note: (If you have never participated in a boundary crossing, describe a situation where you could imagine doing so. Also if you not been guilty of a boundary violation, describe a boundary violation you witnessed and then explain how the person guilty of the violation should have handled the situation.)
- Look at PPT 14 and the HIPAA Violations vid (located on D2L under online lectures). After reviewing both, determine in your own words all the violations committed in the vid. Specifically you will identify the violation by number (they are numbered in the vid as "scenes"), explain what occurred, and then state why HIPAA says the action is a violation.
- Based on PPT 14, would the front desk person at your local gym violate HIPAA if she asked if you had received the covid vaccine?
