LECTURE REFLECTION: Chapter 12

Instructions

After reading chapter 12, watch Nikole's lecture and the other video and submit your reflection questions.

This week's Reflection Question:

  1. Answer the question(s) from the VIDEO "The Gift of Conflict" (Questions noted below)

Answers should be written in paragraph format. I am interested in your own thoughts and ideas. Consider including connections to course material to further justify your points.

According to TED.com (2023), "Disagreeing is something most people avoid whenever possible. But Amy Gallo has spent three years researching conflict and shares how staying silent can be damaging, and how speaking up when you disagree can be productive, as long as it’s done with compassion and kindness. In a world where people increasingly avoid conflict by seeking out those who see things the same way, Gallo outlines tools to navigate disagreements and approach conflict with calm and confidence. Plus, she shares a mantra that everyone will want to remember."

REFLECTION QUESTION(S):
  1. Based on our readings and thinking about one of your most valued relationships, what tends to be the "norm" when conflict arises? In other words, what types of conflict tend to arise most (psudo, fact, value, policy, ego, meta)? Explain. Finally, in this same relationship, do you have a conflict management style that also tends to be the norm?
  2. Based on what Amy Gallo has noted about her research around conflict, what are two take-away's from her recommendations that you can use to improve conflict resolution in your own relationships? How might you use this information in the relationship you discuss in question 1?

Relationships are HARD, even when they seek like they are strong and healthy, conflict can arise. This article provides insight into why confict can be healthy in our relationships, even if we stray away from it. I don't think ANYONE likes conflict, but it does have it's place and it is inevitable.

What might you take away from this and apply to your own life?
