Communication and culture Professional Bio & Resume

Overview

Overview:

Personally and professionally, we are all bound to interact with people who have cultural and experiential backgrounds that are different from our own. These differences result in different perspectives, different styles of decision-making, and different communication styles and expectations. Personally, developing intercultural competence is a good choice, especially if you like to travel to different regions or other countries. But communication and cultural competence becomes integral at a professional level, where you will be expected to work with clients, colleagues, organizations, manufacturers, businesses, and industry leaders with world views and expectations that are different from yours.

For this assignment, students will use the M1 mini-lectures, PowerPoints, assignments, and other materials to develop a Communication and Culture Professional Bio and Resume (maximum of two pages) that highlights how who they are from the perspective of their backgrounds, experiences, cultural and co-cultural memberships, communication styles and preferences, and non-technical professional goals informs their engineering identities and capacity as professionals.

Purpose

To develop an understanding of yourself from a communication standpoint so that you can more fully understand the driving factors behind:

    • Your communication preferences and expectations
    • Your perspective and worldview
    • Your expectations of others
    • Your professional attitudes, preferences, and communication
    • Your personal and professional interactions with other engineers and professionals
    • How your perspective and approach to teamwork and problem solving is one of many different perspectives and approaches that offer different strengths and paths to arrive at collaborative solutions

Objectives

This assignment achieves the following GenEd Human and Cultural Diversity assessment objective:

    • Satisfactory: Student identifies and recognizes new perspectives about own cultural rules/biases.
    • Exceeds Expectations: Student articulates insights into own cultural rules/biases.

Assignment Context

The Objective of the Document

For this assignment, imagine you have just graduated from your undergraduate program and are posting this Bio and Resume on Linkedin as one of the documents about yourself that recruiters can view. The purpose of this Bio and Resume is to show recruiters and employers that you are a well-rounded recent graduate who has the non-technical capacity to be an effective engineer at their organization. You will use this Bio and Resume to demonstrate that you can meet the needs that employers have for recruits who can learn to navigate and assimilate to their company culture, competently engage in teamwork with diverse and cross-disciplinary team members, share ideas with diverse audiences (including non-engineering audiences), appreciate and explore diverse perspectives, adapt to unfamiliar contexts, work with others to problem solve, and think beyond your immediate experience and understanding.

Your Audience

      • The primary audience for your Communication and Culture Bio & Resume is engineering employers and recruiters broadly.
      • This audience is seeking a high level of professionalism, so your document must be well organized, easy to read, and nice to look at.
      • Remember that the requirements outlined by the international accrediting agencies and federations discussed in M1 are based largely on the needs of engineering employers globally.
          • This means that employers want to recruit employees with higher than average communication and intercultural competence.

What to Include in Your Bio & Resume

You may design your communication and cultural bio & resume as you wish, as long as it is well organized, easy to read, consistent, logical, and no more then 2 pages long. You may find some interesting ideas by doing an image search for "creative resume" and "creative bio." Whatever your design choices, you must include the following:

  1. A professional photo of yourself.
    • You do not need to get a professional photo shoot done, but your photo must be professional in appearance. (i.e., good lighting, wearing appropriate clothes, nice background).
  2. An introductory summary statement describing how the content shared in your Bio & Resume addresses the international engineering education standards set by accrediting bodies and engineering federations around the world. The statement should be descriptive but concise; 3-4 sentences.
  3. A descriptive overview of your communicator environment (transactional model of communication)
    • Background and experience that impact your perspective and inform your professional capacities
    • Be sure to provide sufficient description of 2-3 sentences for each item you include
    • Include an introductory summary to this section that explains how your background and experience inform your unique perspectives as an aspiring engineer. Although this summary will come first, it should be written after you have completed this section.
  4. A descriptive overview of your cultural and co-cultural memberships.
    • Include a summary statement regarding how you believe these memberships impact your perspectives.
    • Claiming that they do not impact your perspectives is incorrect and will not be sufficient.
  5. A descriptive overview of your prior teamwork experiences (does not have to be academic or professional) and how those experiences inform your professional mindset.
  6. A statement that assesses how you see yourself as a team member.
  7. Your Communicator Diagram, which you will directly reference.
    • Take a screenshot of your diagram and add it as an image. You will be able to resize it so it fits reasonably in your bio & profile.
  8. While the above is required, you may add other personal/professional experiences or information that you think would make your profile more robust if you so choose.
    • You may also choose to add an additional, relevant visual aid that will help your audience more deeply understand and/or contextualize something you want to highlight (an additional visual component must be relevant).
      • There will be a follow-up assignment in Module 2 where you will revise your Bio & Resume, and in that revision students will add an additional visual aid. Students who include a relevant visual aid now will be able to get some feedback on that aspect.

Submission

  • Save your Word doc as a PDF (Links to an external site.) and submit the PDF (see linked YouTube video if you don't know how to save Word docs as PDFs)
  • NAME YOUR FILE(S) APPROPRIATELY -- You will NOT have the opportunity to resubmit your work after the assignments have closed, even if you accidentally uploaded the wrong assignment because you mixed up the file names. Be thoughtful and ca
