  • Case Study:What is Canada's immigration policy?By Tony Keller | July 12, 2018.
  • Summary: Canada's which has high proportion of immigrant population like the United States has an immigration system that is often contrasted with that of the United States as system that works to the benefit of the Canadians as well as the immigrants. The unspoken underpinning of Canada’s otherwise welcoming immigration policy is a giant and assiduously maintained border wall. Canada's geographic isolation has effectively kept people from appearing at 3 of their 4 physical borders and applying for asylum. The fourth wall is Canada’s southern border with the U.S. The strength of the American economy long meant that few immigrants would think to use the U.S. as a back door into Canada. So the only way to come into Canada was by plane and in order to get on a plane to Canada you had to get pre approved by the Canadian authorities and get a visa. So most of the imigrants to Canada are legally there and are granted entry after being subject to extensive vetting by the Canadian authorities. But this whole system can be circumvented by anyone who is already in the U.S. and is willing to simply walk into Canada at any random spot along the world’s longest undefended border. In 2017, the number of asylum claims filed in Canada doubled from the previous year to 50,000 due to an increase in asylum seekers doing just this and it risks breaking down the system if too many people use it. Consensus among Canadians over immigration isn’t yet broken, but thanks to increased number of illegal border crossings it is visibly fraying. But the issue isn’t just how many are coming. It’s how they’re coming.
  • QUESTIONS:
  • What has changed in the past few years to increase the illegal migration into Canada?

Is immigration a net bad or good for Canada? Who are the people who benefit and who are the people who lose?

  • Does it matter if the immigration is legal or illegal? Explain why or why not.

If you were the CEO of Canadian company what advise would you provide the Canadian authorities to the deal with this issue?
