Q1
Does working part time while attending high school improve or hurt a student’s overall performance? Some studies suggest that working a part-time job can have a positive impact on GPA, particularly when students work fewer than 10 hours per week. However, other studies indicate that working more than 11 hours per week can lead to a decline in GPA.
The data in the excel file attached to this question contains a sample of 200 students, their GPA, Number of Hours worked per week at a part time job, and their year of study. Use the sample to perform a single linear regression between a students GPA (as your dependent variable) and Part-time hours (as your independent variable).
****** Show all the calculations required for question 1 using the formulae we used in our class.
Write out your model and explain the coefficients.
What does the model allow you to say about the studies? Does Working part time help or hinder a highschoolers scholastic performance? How confident are you in your conclusion?

Another recent study was just published which suggested working part time in your first year of high school was harmful to performance, but working part time was beneficial for students who were in their second year of study.
Use the same excel file from question one to run a multiple regression in excel, with GPA as your dependent variable and year of study and part time hours as your two independent variables.
Write out the model and explain your coefficients.
What does your regression say about the results of the recent study?

The NHL draft has become very technical, the use of statistics is widespread and player analysis is big business. The head of the Edmonton Oilers statistics department is trying to build a model that will help them determine which WHL players to draft this coming year. He is aware that his team needs goal scorers and would like to find a way to predict the number of goals a player will score in the NHL. You gather a random sample of players and the results are contained in the excel file attached to this question.
The excel file contains a sample of over 100 players, the number of Goals each player scored in his first two full years as an NHL player, the number of goals he scored in his last full year in the WHL, his age, and the number of years of professional Hockey.
a. Develop a regression model to help the Oilers statistician and use excel to produce the regression output.
b. Interpret each of the coefficients.
c. How well does the model fit?
d. Test the model’s validity, use alpha =.05.
e. Do each of the independent variables belong in the model?
f. What does the graph in the attached file below tell you about your regression results?
