Summary: The goal of this article is to show how company decisions and strategic management are influenced by managerial accounting. The methodology of the article is qualitative and analytical, and the literature review is based on 66 articles published from 1981-2021. The article took a look at strategic management accounting through time and how it has evolved. Financial accounting and managerial accounting are differentiated based on external vs internal reporting. The article mentions how managerial accounting has received less attention than financial accounting. In the 1940’s, managerial accounting started using budgets, break-point analysis, cost-volume-profit analysis, and more to support decision-making. This led to the role of accounting used to support planning, controlling, and decision-making. Growing further in 1981, strategic managerial accounting emerged as a field that supports strategic targeting through the use of external and long-term information. Strategy is important as it establishes direction, outsmarts competitors, focus efforts, develops beliefs, reduce uncertainty, creates consistency, and contributes to order and efficiency. Strategic managerial accounting is able to help a company understand its external environment and demand for change through sustainable competitive advantage. It is a concept that integrates accounting, management, marketing, and strategy. Four functions of strategic managerial accounting include: getting intel on competitors, using accounting for strategic business decisions, cut costs based on strategic decisions, and create competitive advantage. Organizations with intense market competition, uncertain environmental impacts, a bigger board of directors, and independent board, the presence of an audit committee, and high frequency meetings are more likely to utilize strategic managerial accounting. The article concludes by giving research gaps and suggestions for future study including cooperation among diverse internal departments, reasons for limited uses, and cost of implementation.

Reaction: This article was interesting as it provided insight into the development of strategic managerial accounting (SMA). Instead of looking simply at the internal, past numbers to help make decisions for the future, SMA uses marketing, competition, and accounting to develop a strategic plan that provides consistency and success. From this article, it sounds like financial accounting is more narrow in scope when compared to managerial accounting. But managerial accounting is more specific in scope as it will often pertain to a particular segment or product created by the company. It also sounds like it would be difficult to have strategic managerial accountants without also having financial accountants. A company still needs someone to manage their books and report out to the auditing firms. But, instead of relying on the financial accountants to build strategy, the company could turn to another accountant who understands the numbers and figures, but puts it into the context of the global market and the uncertain market. This let’s the finance accountants focus on their accuracy and not have the weight of the company strategy also looming.

Summary:

In their paper Managerial Accounting for Decision-Making and Planning, Casas-Arce, Cheng, Grabner, and Modell (2022) explore how managerial accounting influences strategic company choices. The authors stress that managerial accounting is a vital tool for managers to maximize resource allocation, boost productivity, and increase profitability. It is not just about documenting financial transactions. The importance of key accounting methods like variance analysis, budgeting, and cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis in managerial decision-making is emphasized. The article's main focus is on the behavioral side of decision-making. To effectively lead company strategies, managers must learn to evaluate and apply financial data, according to the authors, who contend that this alone is insufficient. Essential insights from managerial accounting enable businesses to assess their financial performance, spot inefficiencies, and modify their plans in reaction to changes in the market. According to the article, companies that operate in dynamic environments need to keep their accounting systems agile in order to stay competitive.

The writers also go into how managerial accounting can be incorporated into more comprehensive strategy planning. Businesses can increase forecasting accuracy, improve performance reviews, and make better internal decisions by coordinating financial data with corporate goals. Businesses can adjust to external obstacles and seize new possibilities thanks to the flexibility of managerial accounting systems.

In the end, the paper supports the idea that managerial accounting actively contributes to company performance. When used properly, it helps businesses create data-driven plans, optimize processes, and attain long-term expansion in a constantly shifting economic environment. Reaction:

I now know that managerial accounting is an essential instrument for strategic decision-making and goes beyond financial tracking, thanks to this essay. Considering that I have firsthand experience with how corporate context and data interpretation impact decision-making, the behavioral factors talk was quite insightful. Good management accounting offers insights into expenses, profitability, and resource allocation in addition to financial data, which helps to form business plans. In my present sales position, I have direct experience with how managerial accounting methods like cost analysis, variance analysis, and budgeting may maximize pricing strategies and profitability. With the help of these technologies, companies can modify their plans in response to market conditions, guaranteeing growth and financial stability. Since businesses must constantly improve their accounting procedures to stay competitive in ever-changing markets, the article's emphasis on flexibility also struck a chord with me. In the end, this paper emphasizes how crucial it is to use accounting data proactively so that companies can make thoughtful, proactive decisions as opposed to just responding to financial resources.

Article Three

SWOT Analysis of C&C Sports

C&C Sports has strong brand recognition with quality products and customer service, but its limited product range and liquidity concerns present challenges. High school baseball participation offers a market opportunity, but declining industry trends and supply chain risks are threats. To sustain growth, C&C Sports should consider product diversification and digital innovation to strengthen its competitive position. Strengths: C&C Sports has several competitive advantages. It is known for producing high-quality jerseys, pants, and jackets, which differentiates it in the market (Davis & Davis, 2020). The company manufactures domestically, ensuring quick delivery and strong quality control. Additionally, fast customer service enhances client satisfaction. Financially, C&C Sports has shown a steady increase in gross profit and net income, highlighting its profitability (Davis & Davis, 2020).

Weaknesses: Despite financial growth, C&C Sports faces challenges. The limited product line restricts market expansion opportunities (Davis & Davis, 2020). Additionally, its balance sheet shows declining cash alongside higher accounts receivable (A/R) and inventory levels, which may indicate liquidity concerns. The company's dependence on a niche market—local sports uniforms—also limits broader market reach.

Opportunities: C&C Sports can expand by diversifying its product offerings beyond sports uniforms to attract new customer segments. The growth in high school baseball participation provides a target market opportunity (Davis & Davis, 2020). Additionally, investing in digital ordering systems and customization tools can enhance the customer experience and drive sales.

Threats: Industry trends pose significant risks. Sports uniform shipments are declining, and overall baseball participation has decreased, reducing demand (Davis & Davis, 2020). Supply chain risks are also a concern, as C&C Sports relies on specialty U.S.-made fabrics, which could lead to cost increases or disruptions. Finally, competition from larger apparel brands offering lower-cost alternatives or diversified product lines poses a threat to market share.
