Overview
This case study report challenges students to critically analyze a multinational corporation’s decision to expand into a developing country
Case Study Scenario: A multinational corporation (MNC) specializing in renewable energy products is considering expanding its operations by entering a developing country. The decision hinges on several factors, including trade policies, comparative advantages, and the potential impact of macroeconomic indicators like GDP, trade balance, and the nation’s balance of payments.
Students must select a developing country of their choice and critically analyze the corporation's decision to enter the new market by addressing the following:
1. Macroeconomic Indicators:
o Evaluate the selected country’s GDP, national income trends, and trade patterns.
o Identify potential winners and losers of globalization in this context.
2. International Trade Theories: o Apply the Theory of Comparative Advantage and Factor Endowment Theory to justify whether the MNC should establish production in this country or outsource. o Discuss the potential benefits and risks of trade policies, tariffs, or quotas in the chosen country.
3. Balance of Payments and Trade Deficits (Unit 3): o Assess how the selected country's balance of payments might influence the MNC’s decision. o Explore the implications of trade deficits on the corporation’s long-term profitability. Your case study should have the following structure:
