Pentachlorophenol (PCP is a chemical that was once used throughout the U.S. as a pesticide and as wood preservative). Since 1984, the use of PCP has been restricted. Pentachlorophenol is one of the primary contaminants at one of the Superfund sites in Butte, the Montana Pole and Treatment Plant (MPTP). The MPTP operated from 1946 until 1984, and it was listed on the NPL in 1987. The Record of Decision (ROD) in 1993 stated that the maximum concentration of PCP measured in the surface soils was 1,510,000 µg/kg.
Please find the following fate-and-transport parameters for PCP. (Please list your reference for each) - 5pts
- Water solubility (ws):
- Vapor pressure (vp):
- Henry’s Law constant (H):
- Octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow):
Then answer the following questions (9 pt.)
- Should runoff of PCP occur?
- Should leaching of PCP occur?
- Should volatilization of PCP occur?
- Should adsorption of PCP occur in the soil?
- Should bioaccumulation of PCP occur in the food chain?
What are the possible exposure pathways based on the previous discussion? (6 pt.)
