CAD from Orthographic Drawing

Description and Objectives

The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success:

  • Turn a dimensioned 2D engineering drawing into a 3D CAD model
  • Use a CAD software
  • Learn the importance of detail and accuracy when communicating
(Engineering drawings and CAD models are still forms of communication!)

Submission Format

Each individual student will submit a single pdf file containing multiple screenshots of your final 3D CAD drawing. Make sure the zoom level is appropriate and the screenshot is not blurry.

Instructions

  1. There are four (4) orthographic drawings in the following folder. Each drawing has 3 views and dimensions. Choose one of these four drawings.

  2. Utilizing your desired CAD software of choice (e.g., tinkerCAD, fusion360, SolidWorks, etc.), create a 3D CAD model of your chosen orthographic drawing.
See Introduction to CAD Video Lectures page for trainings/tutorials on tinkerCAD and Fusion360.
  3. Take multiple screenshots of your CAD model from various angles and paste them into a pdf file.
Please choose the angles that show the '3D nature' and various features of your model, e.g., be close to the 'isometric view' (google what it is!).

Beware! Not all the dimensional information in the drawings is accurate - this is to help emphasize the importance of being accurate and complete when we communicate with drawings! If you do come across a weird dimension, you can either fix your CAD so it seems more correct or use the incorrect dimensions. Your submission does not need to be perfect, this is mostly to serve as practice working with these CAD tools!
