3 advanced thermofluids questions

Overview

Question 1 An electric power of 2 kW is supplied to a square plate (400 mm ×400 mm ×5 mm). The plate is fully submerged and kept in vertical orientation in an engine oil at 25 ◦C. If the heat dissipated from both sides, find the plate surface temperature? Assuming the plate has been rotated to be in horizontal orientations and the heat dissipated from both top and lower surface, find the plate surface temperature?

Question 2 A tube in the figure below with r = 0.1 and h = 0.25. End 1 is black surface (ϵ1 = 1) and it has a temperature T1 = 550 K. The other end (2) has emissivity (ϵ2 = 0.75) and temperature T2 = 300 K. The outer surfaces of this tube are well insulated and can be treated as adiabatic. Radiation heat transfer has a T4 dependency, thus where temperature gradients exist using the average surface temperature can be a poor assumption. In an attempt to improve the modelling of the system, the re radiating body area is split into equally sized zones 3 and 4 as shown in figure 1. Find the heat transfer Q1 and Q2 and the temperatures T3 and T4 of the two re-radiating zones. The figure has zone 5 which is an imaginary auxiliary area. see figure 1 Tube in the attached file

Question 3 A power plant operates on a Rankine cycle operates with reheated and one open feedwater heater, as shown in figure 2. The steam flow is expanded in the turbine to 2500 kPa and then reheated in the boiler to 600◦C. Some steam is extracted at 100 kPa for the open feedwater heating. Assuming that the net plant output is to be 1000MW, find: 1. The power required to operate the pumps. 2. The heat rejection rate in the condenser. 3. The mass flow rate in the boiler. 4. The thermal efficiency of the cycle.
