Optimizing Logistics Systems Using Exact and Heuristic Methods: Case of a Nonprofit Food Redistribution Network

Overview

Modeling, coding, and analysis: We are a student team seeking an expert for a university-level project in Optimization Methods. The assignment involves developing two high-quality solutions to a complex logistics optimization problem — one using an exact method (e.g., linear/integer programming) and the other using a heuristic or metaheuristic approach (e.g., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing). Deliverables include mathematical modeling, solution implementation, simulation via a provided desktop application, and a detailed report with technical and business analysis. The case centers on SustainaRoma, a nonprofit organization in Rome that collects surplus food from bakeries, markets, and greengrocers and distributes it to soup kitchens using a cargo bike fleet. We must make decisions about resource allocation (riders, vehicles, volunteers), facility location (warehouses), route design, and sponsor engagement to maximize operational profit over a six-month period. All necessary data files, a custom simulation tool (SoS app), and documentation are available. We’re looking for a tutor with strong skills in operations research, mathematical programming, and metaheuristic algorithm design who do modeling, coding, and analysis.
