Overview
Developing a Comprehensive Systems Engineering Plan for a Complex System
Objective: This case study aims to integrate key concepts, processes, and methods from the course topics into a practical, real-world application. You will simulate the role of a systems engineer working on a complex project and apply systems engineering principles to develop a comprehensive plan.
Scenario:
You are part of a systems engineering team tasked with designing, developing, and deploying a next-generation urban transportation system (e.g., autonomous electric buses with smart infrastructure integration). This project must account for the entire system lifecycle, from concept to operation and maintenance, while balancing technical, economic, and social factors.
Assignment Details:
You will individually address the following components, corresponding to course topics. The final deliverable will be a Systems Engineering Plan (SEP), submitted in report format.
Part 1: Foundations
· Introduction to Systems Engineering: - Define the purpose and scope of the project.
· Systems Engineering Foundations: - Identify key stakeholders and their needs.
Part 2: Key Management Processes
· Infrastructure - Outline the infrastructure required for development and deployment.
· Quality Management - Develop a quality management plan addressing how you will ensure the reliability and safety of the system.
Part 3: Technical Processes
· System Requirements and Architecture:
- Develop a preliminary set of system requirements (functional and non-functional). -
- Create a high-level system architecture diagram, detailing major subsystems and their interactions.
Part 4: Analysis and Maintenance
· Verification, Validation, and Maintenance:
Propose a plan for verifying and validating system requirements.
Outline a maintenance strategy to ensure long-term operation and reliability.
Part 5: Advanced Topics
· Human-Computer Interaction (HCI): - Describe how the system will interact with users and ensure usability.
Deliverables:
1. Final Report: Comprehensive Systems Engineering Plan (10–15 pages), font 11pp, space 1.5
Grading Criteria:
The following rubric will be used to evaluate the assignment. Points are assigned based on the following criteria:
A (90–100): Exceptional performance demonstrating mastery of all components.
B (80–89): Good performance with minor gaps in detail or application.
C (70–79): Satisfactory performance with noticeable gaps or inconsistencies.
D (60–69): Below average performance with significant issues in understanding or execution.
F (<60): Fails to meet the minimum requirements for the assignment.
