Research Paper Assignment: Leadership in Engineering
Objective
The goal of this assignment is to write a research paper that critically analyzes leadership within engineering disciplines. Leadership plays a vital role in shaping technical teams, guiding innovation, ensuring project success, and adapting to rapidly changing technologies and environments. Through this assignment, you will explore leadership as it applies to engineering, and examine its characteristics, challenges, and evolving trends.
You are encouraged to focus on a specific aspect of leadership within engineering. Potential areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
- Trust and psychological safety within engineering teams
- Leadership roles in project-based or agile environments
- Managing risk and uncertainty through leadership
- Ethical decision-making and responsibility in engineering leadership
- Collaborative leadership across interdisciplinary or global teams
- Transformational leadership in technology-driven projects
- Developing leadership capacity among engineers
This focused approach will allow for deeper exploration of leadership principles as they relate to real-world engineering practices and research.
Paper Structure
Your paper should follow a clear, organized format with the following required sections:
- Title Page
Include the title of your paper, your name, course name and number, instructor’s name, and date of submission. - Abstract (150–200 words)
Provide a concise summary of your research, including the focus area, purpose of the study, key findings, and main conclusions. - Introduction (1–2 pages)
Define leadership in the context of engineering. Explain its significance in technical projects, innovation, team management, and professional development. Clearly state your specific research focus or question and outline the structure of the paper. - Background and Literature Review (2–3 pages)
Summarize existing research on leadership in engineering. Review key leadership theories, models, or case examples relevant to your selected topic. Identify gaps in the literature or areas of debate that your paper addresses. - Research Methods (1 page)
Describe your research approach, which will likely be a literature review. Explain how you selected your sources, including any databases or search strategies, and why the selected sources are relevant to your topic. - Findings and Discussion (2–3 pages)
Present the key insights you have gathered from the literature. Analyze how leadership is practiced in engineering, with specific attention to the aspect you’ve chosen (e.g., trust, risk, ethical leadership). Discuss challenges, best practices, and the implications for future leadership development. - Conclusion (1 page)
Summarize your key points and reflect on the broader significance of your findings. Offer specific recommendations for engineers who aspire to take on leadership roles or improve their leadership skills in the chosen area. - References
You are required to review and critically analyze at least 15 peer-reviewed articles published after 2015. In addition to scholarly literature, you may supplement your paper with relevant industry reports, detailed case studies, or interviews with experts.. Use APA format for all in-text citations and references.
Formatting Requirements
- Length: 7-10 pages (excluding title page and references)
- Spacing: 1.5-spaced
