Consider the times that you may have seen new commercial and residential construction in your local area. Recall in more recent years the use of a staked-down plastic tarp and some type of square grass bales (wheat straw, coastal grass, etc.) running parallel to the plastic tarp. You may have also noticed a posted stormwater pollution prevention plan or SWP3 notification beside the plastic tarp. How effective did you perceive that method of physical barrier was in keeping soil and sediment from running off the site during storm events? Why is this? What specific suggestions for improvement would you have for the environmental engineering company that elected to use and manage that technology for their required SWP3 program?

One of the techniques briefly mentioned in this unit is the growing practice of cleaning up treated wastewater to be reused as potable water. What do you think would be the public perception if your own community was asked to adopt this technique as a means of water conservation? What objections could you anticipate? Would you be okay with this plan? What type of assurances would you personally want to see with this type of incorporated technique in your community’s pollution prevention plant (P3)?
