Overview
You are planning to invest a significant amount of capital to increase the usage of
alternative energy in the United States, and you are considering buying stock in one or
more of the following companies.
Company A: constructs and operates nuclear reactors
Company B: builds dams and hydroelectric plants
Company C: refines ethanol for fuel from corn and other biomass sources
Company D: manufactures solar cells for small-scale consumer use
a) Discuss the major environmental benefits and concerns (locally, nationally and
worldwide) associated with each of these energy technologies, including comparing
them to fossil fuels.
b) Assume all the companies are financially sound and will provide a positive return on
your investment. You should consider economic, political and social ramifications of
your decision, but your major concern is the benefit to the environment. Decide how
you will apportion your investment; you may decide to put all your money in one
company or split it among more than one. Give the percentage of money you will invest
in each company, and explain the reasons for your answer.
