ENVS 340 OCC Climate Justice as Environmental Justice Case Study

Overview

For this assignment, you will analyze a specific case study that focuses on the intersections of climate justice and environmental justice. You will critically examine the case, discuss the social, economic, and environmental implications, and propose possible solutions or policy recommendations to address the issues identified. Your analysis should demonstrate a clear understanding of climate justice and environmental justice concepts, theories, and debates.

Your case study should be at least 750 words. Cite Climate Change From the Streets and at least one other academic source to support your analysis. Use standard academic paper format – 1” margins, 12 pt. font (Times New Roman, Courier, Arial) double-spacing, and APA, Chicago or MLA citation style.

Your final paper MUST be submitted as a Word doc. If you use pages, you will need to convert to Word. Please do NOT submit your work as a PDF.

Once you have conducted some research and gathered the necessary information, your analysis should follow these guidelines.

  1. Choose a case study: Select a real-world case study exemplifying the challenges of climate justice and environmental justice by linking a type of structural or systemic inequity with a particular environmental impact. See examples listed—these are only suggestions.
  2. Research: Conduct research on your chosen case study, using academic sources, news articles, reports, and other reliable sources. Familiarize yourself with the context, history, and key stakeholders.
  3. Analyze the case: Write a 750-1000 word paper, addressing the following aspects:
  • Context and background: Briefly describe the case, including the geographical location, time period, key stakeholders, and the main environmental and social issues.
  • Problem identification: Identify and discuss the main environmental and social problems in your case study and explain how these problems relate to both climate justice and environmental justice.
  • Impacts and implications: Discuss the social, economic, and environmental implications of the case for different stakeholders, including vulnerable populations.
  • Possible solutions and policy recommendations: Propose potential solutions and policy recommendations to address the issues identified in the case, and discuss their feasibility, challenges, and potential outcomes.

Intergenerational climate injustice (youth suing governments over climate change)

Discrimination against the disabled, chronically ill, and elderly

Unequal mitigation and adaptation (access to renewable energy, sea walls, technology, etc.)

Examples of Environmental Impacts

Sea-level rise

Extreme weather events

Food insecurity

Air pollution

Heatwaves (Urban heat islands, etc.)

Extraction, Mining

Deforestation

Water scarcity
