Questions:
1. Explain why an increase in hydrogen ions in the water (acidification) results in a lower availability of calcium carbonate in ocean waters.
2. Why is ocean acidification important to oyster farmers?
3. Refer to the time series of atmospheric CO2, seawater CO2, and seawater pH (the datasets) to answer the following questions. Describe the trend for each of the three data sets. Does comparing the trends from these three time series data sets provide evidence for a cause and effect relationship between increasing CO2 emissions and ocean acidification. Explain why or why not.
4. Think about Dr. Hofmann's research (described in a video) and describe how exposure to a more acidic pH affects the growth, development and reproduction of sea urchins.
