Emerging Infectious Disease Research Paper
Brief assignment: Each student will write an eight page research paper (page
requirements do not including figures or references), on an Emerging Infectious Disease
incorporating at least five peer reviewed references. In this paper your will discuss the
factors that influence the emergence of this disease. These factors may include:
microbial adaptation (evolution), human technology, population dynamics, social and
behavioral influences, climate change, and political will (loss of public health
infrastructure).
TOPIC: Your paper will focus on one particular disease and the specific factors and
evidence (provided in the literature) that demonstrate it is an emerging infectious
disease. The purpose of a research paper is to show progress in a particular area of
research that advances knowledge and identifies areas for future study. When
considering your disease, include scientific information, but also remember to consider
social and cultural issues. Review our Module (Module 2) where we discuss EIDs.
COVER(title)PAGE - in APA style (which should include your name, course and section,
date, my name. The title should give your audience a good idea of what your paper is
about. For example: Malaria — A Clear Example of A Re-Emerging Infectious Disease.
THESIS: A thesis statement must be included in the introduction, generally at the end
of the introductory material. The body of your paper should provide supporting evidence
to support your thesis, in a logical fully developed, consistent manner. Your thesis
statement should generally describe your scholarly argument (e.g., “Dengue is clearly an
example of an emerging infectious disease.)
SOURCES: Use a minimum of 5 peer reviewed, varied, CURRENT (within the last 3
or 5 years) sources. Use the resources through the library to locate peer reviewed
articles. If you have trouble, contact the library’s reference desk at 1-866-928-5424 or
email the Health Sciences librarian, Ann Hallyburton, at [email protected]. Use
parenthetical citations (citation information in text between parenthesis). Give
parenthetical citation information for quotations AND paraphrases. Include page number
for direct quotes. See additional sheet on APA referencing. Use quotes judiciously - only
when paraphrasing will make the statement unclear or a kernel of an idea is so perfectly
stated that trying to paraphrase in your own words will ruin the impact of the statement.
A paper which is just a string of quotes shows that the author made no attempt to come
to grips with the subject, but is just regurgitating information.
CONCLUSION - should not be a regurgitation of your whole paper, but should give it
closure. Some summation is okay - echoing your main theme. Your conclusion could
project into the future of the technology or research, if appropriate.
