3. Answer questions below.

Environmental migrants: People who are forced to leave their home region due to sudden or long-term changes to their local environment.

1. In Isle de Jean Charles, what is the environmental change that is forcing residents to leave?

2. What are three major impacts of climate change that may result in environmental migrants?

3. What regions of the world might you expect the most environmental migrants from if climate change continues to accelerate?

4. The Isle de Jean Charles is mostly inhabited by Native Americans who settled there in order to avoid the Trail of Tears. In Alaska, another group of indigenous people, the Inuits, are threatened by changes in the land and climate. For these first nations, living off the land is a way of life. What changes are being faced in Alaska?

5. In early 2016, a 48-million-dollar grant was the first allocation of federal tax dollars to aid a community suffering from direct impact of climate change. Louisiana has lost land mass comparable to the size of the state of Delaware revealing land mass loss that is at a rate faster than many places in the world. The resettlement plan for the Isle de Jean Charles is at the forefront of responding to climate change without destroying the community that resides within.

a) Do you think that it is the responsibility of the Federal government to resettle those people and communities who are losing land due to climate change?

b) What about coastal development?

c) Do you think the Federal Government owes a greater responsibility to Native American populations?

d) What, if any, responsibility do you think that GHG producing sectors should have?
