1) To test the amount of waste I generate myself, I used a trash bin for just my room and trash, rather than my whole family's waste. My total waste output for the day was roughly 3.2 pounds. This included plastic packaging like some snack wrappers and a juice container, paper items including receipts and old school work, and miscellaneous waste like used tissues. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the average American generates around 4.9 pounds of waste per day (epa.gov, 2024). This means that while I produced slightly less than the national average, my waste generation is still significant for just one day. In addition to the waste I threw away at home, I also discarded a can of soda and used some paper towels in a public restroom. I estimate about 1 pound of the waste I generated could have been either reused or recycled. This includes recycling the school work paper. Additionally, I could reduce my snacking habits so that I am not throwing away as many packages or wrapping paper. This exercise made me much more aware of how much I throw away each day and how many of those items do not necessarily need to be wasted. Making small changes like my snacking habits and recycling could have a meaningful impact over time, as long as I make it a consistent habit.

2) Good Evening All,
I do not use a waste bin considering that I live on board Camp Pendleton which is a Marine Corps Base. The circumstances would be different if I had my own house, but since I live in the barracks I generate little to no waste. Majority of the time I dine at the mess hall, or I just buy something to have on the way to work. As stated in the cited article, "he average U.S. resident produces about 4.5 pounds per day, and most of it is comprised of recyclable items" (Juliana M., 2023). As stated previously, I realistically couldn't compare the given information to myself. As for other places where waste was generated, work is the only other place aside from special occasions. Majority of the time the items being disposed is food or food containers along with bottles of whatever I decided to drink from the mess hall. I think I have done a fair job with the waste I have generated. I mainly use washable items when dining at the mess hall.
