Environmental Science Question

Overview

I dont have access to the test. Once you accept the assignment we will have 45 minutes. I will send you the questions i need assistance on. Here is an example of a short answer question from last exam.

For this question, please do not copy and paste into ChatGpt. Make sure you use example from the lectures, textbook, or scholarly articles. Once you write your answer cite where the information came from in order to receive credit.

Examine how the environment has shaped physical and behavioral traits for one non-human primate. How have these primates adapted to their environments? First write about one physical trait and how their environment has shaped them? Next, how has one behavioral trait been shaped by their environment? Can Natural Selection explain how these traits arose?

My Answer:

Non-Human Primate: Chimpanzee

Physical Trait - Opposable Thumbs:

Chimpanzees possess opposable thumbs, which enable them to accurately grasp and manipulate objects. This particular modality has become an adaptation with a primary purpose for their arboreal habitats, and access to resources through climbing trees and manipulating items like fruit, tools, and tools for tools. The LAVC lecture video, “Chimpanzee Traits and Adaptations” (YouTube, Vu8PVdA-oaM) explains how chimpanzee opposable thumbs serve to enhance their ability to brachiate and manage incidental items, such as sticks and stones, providing access to food resources in complex arboreal environments.

Behavioral Trait - Tool Use:

Chimpanzees exhibit learned use of tools, including using twigs to extract termites or leaves to soak up water. Furthermore, the behaviors show us how chimpanzees can and do learn from their environmental challenges, including limited food options. The LAVC lecture, "Chimpanzee Social and Behavioral Traits" (Youtube, XyiipM_dp9w), shows us how learned patterns of behaviors are passed down through generations of chimpanzees (strong level of social learning). According to the LAVC lecture slides ("Primate Behavior," slide 12), chimpanzees exhibit behavioral modification to solve problems (ability to adapt and change behaviors based on intelligence and experience).

Natural Selection Explanation:

Natural selection explains how both traits evolved: chimpanzees with superior grip and smarter behavior had higher survival and reproductive rates. As that trait became a more frequent occurrence due to success in competition in their given environments (LAVC lecture video, Vu8PVdA-oaM).
