Working Landscapes: Natural Resiliency And Redesign

Overview

Students will research, analyze and critique case studies demonstrating levels of success in the integration of ecological principles in civil, commercial, and private design. Case study analysis will result in critiques, a formal presentation, and a final paper. Products of the case study analysis will include critical appraisal of the current conditions at the selected site, desired outcome(s), expected obstacles, and interpretation of the opportunities for natural restoration through design. Critical analysis of existing and anticipated impacts, current planned or completed development projects addressing (or ignoring) those impacts at regional, sub-regional, and site-based scales will allow students to explore the dynamics of actual project implementation, and demonstrate knowledge of natural forces operating in ex-urban, suburban, and/or urban landscapes and the extent to which accommodation of those forces can be made to obtain sustainable outcomes.

Students will submit a one-page description of the case study of their choosing for review and comment. Presentations, including brief presentations seeking critiques and input from the class, and one long formal presentation on the results of each student’s investigation will serve to characterize the projects and will include a general description of the project, identification of the ecological resources supporting the project as well as the socio-economic benefit gained by the project, and exploration of the project’s challenges and their possible resolution(s). Presenters will engage the class in scenario analysis and discussion towards problem-solving. Each review presentation should be 5-10 minutes, and the formal presentation should be approximately 20 minutes with an additional 10 minutes reserved for student-led discussion. Presentation files will be submitted as scheduled. The final paper will elaborate introductory material and provide critical analysis of potential and actual outcomes.

The PDF file was the proposal I submitted earlier, but my professor thought the study area I chose was too large. So I decided to narrow it down to West Pond in Jamaica Bay. I haven’t figured out exactly how to revise or improve it yet — you can be creative and take some freedom with it. And it needs 8-10pages, ill do the presentation by myself. thx buddy
