Integrated STEM and Health Unit Plan

Overview

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are four focus areas that together emphasize innovation, problem-solving, and 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Through inquiry-based teaching and learning, students often use technologies to engage in STEM curricula and lessons. STEM is a fast-growing industry and the skills and knowledge gained are essential for the growing global economy.

Building from the assessment plan you created in Topic 6 or selecting different K-8 science and health standards, use the “ELM-455 Integrated STEM Unit Plan” template and “ELM-455 Class Profile” to design a cross-disciplinary unit plan that integrates science and health, as well as technology, engineering, mathematics, ELA or other standards-based subjects, such as art or theatre.

Note: You can use the class profile and information from your Topic 6 assignment or select new standards to guide your unit plan.

The unit plan should include:

  • Unit Plan Preparation: Includes science and health standards with full language and any number/letter coding, classroom and student factors, five learning objectives, equipment, materials/resources, and technology, 1-2 sentence unit plan summary, academic language, at least three essential questions, overall learning goal, and the approximate time (weeks) and learning progression each week for the unit.
  • Unit Plan Assessment Summary: Includes 3-5 sentences summarizing the formative and summative assessments that would be utilized during this unit. Include how you would differentiate for the students in the class profile.
  • Sequence of Instruction: Design a sequence of instruction for any 3 days/weeks from the unit plan. Write 1-2 sentences for each phase of the 5E Model for inquiry-based instruction for each day/week.
  • Unit Plan Instructional Planning: Select various instructional strategies for direct instruction, engagement activities, assessments, and home connections/activities that would be implemented during this unit. In 5-8 sentences, describe the instructional strategy details, to include how each strategy aligns with the standards, learning goals, and objectives. Address how the instructional strategy will be implemented within the learning plan and what the teachers and students will do for each instructional strategy. Considering the class profile, discuss how you can differentiate each strategy for students with exceptionalities (special education and gifted), English language learners, and early finishers.
  • Unit Plan Cross-Curricular Planning: In 2-3 sentences for each cross-curricular area, describe a plan to integrate math, ELA, technology and/or engineering, and at least one other subject area (e.g., social studies, music, art) and justify your choices.

After completing the unit plan, write a 150-300 word reflection addressing the following:

  • Discuss the real-world learning experiences students would engage in during this unit plan and how these experiences, including the cross-curricular components, could extend learning locally and globally.
  • Describe how your choices for instructional strategies promote inquiry and problem-solving and provide equitable learning experiences for all students.

Support your unit plan with 2-3 scholarly resources.

While APA Style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
