Overview

This week, you will gather and complete the recommended information and supplies listed on the Family Disaster Plan Checklist.

Download this file ... provided below

You will use this Family Disaster Plan Checklist to build your 72-Hour Go Bag photo for the upcoming Discussion Board.

You will need both your Disaster Plan Checklist and your 72-Hour Go Bag for your final Summative Assessment.

  1. Complete all sections. Use yes, check marks, or X's for items you do have. Use need or no for items you do not have. Use N/A for items not applicable to your living situation. Do not leave anything blank.
  2. Remember to protect personal information by using pseudonyms or by providing only partial information.

Example: Sister: Britley *****, phone: 724-***-****, email: b********@yahoo.com

  1. Use complete information for utility companies, public companies, and agencies.
  2. Complete your Family Escape Plan
  • Draw your home floor plan using a home escape plan template.
  • Label all the rooms and identify the doors and windows (see blue window markings)
  • Plan 2 escape routes from every room (see red and yellow markings)
  • Indicate a designated Meeting Place outside your residence (see the tree indicating Meet Here)
  • NOTE: If you live in a multi-story dwelling, explain your escape route if you cannot use the stairs to exit the upper floors.

(See example below: From the National Fire Protection Agency)

  1. Review the rubric for more information on how the assignment will be graded.

Please note: You are not required to purchase any items on this list; however, take note of the items you are missing and consider how they could impact your safety and survival in a disaster. You will be surprised at how many of these items you already have but are not located in one place. Start collecting your items now!

Create a Family Escape Plan. This is one of the major parts of the assignment. You need to draw a basic floor plan of your home showing:

    • All rooms labeled
    • Doors
    • Windows
    • 2 possible escape routes from every room
    • An outdoor meeting place where everyone will meet after evacuating
For example, your meeting place could be a particular tree, mailbox, or other safe location away from the house.

If you live upstairs or in a multi-story home/apartment, you also need to explain how you would escape from an upper floor if you couldn't use the stairs.
