Cinema 107 Understanding Motion Pictures LAVC Screenplay Discussion

Overview

PART 1:

Stranger than Fiction:

Identify the four major plot points. Be sure to number them and describe the scene or sequence for each one.

Example of how to format your initial response:

1) Inciting Incident - The scene where Harold does this and that, yada, yada, yada…..

2) Point of no Return - The scene where this happens...

3) Lowest Point - The scene where this happens...

4) Climax - The scene where this happens….

PART 2:

Adaptation:

This is a Charlie Kauffman script. He is a consummate professional and renowned as one of Hollywood’s leading screenwriters. This film specifically pokes fun at the screenwriter and the rules of writing a great screenplay.

The film Adaptation is about the writing of a fictitious movie called The Orchid Thief. Be careful in this discussion to be clear about whether you are referring to the real Charlie Kauffman and the real script Adaptation or if you are referring to the character “Charlie Kauffman” (played by Nicholas Cage) who is writing The Orchid Thief in the movie.

This discussion is a bit loose. Simply comment on screenwriting rules that are clearly stated in this story yet clearly broken by Kauffman in the writing of this actual movie, Adaptation. It’s always a bit of a mind-bender when dealing with a movie within a movie. Don’t get wrapped up in how to properly respond to this post. Identify screenwriting rules and identify the ones that are broken. Just go with it. This one should be pretty fun. QUICK NOTE FOR CLARIFICATION:

PLEASE ONLY SUBMIT ONE INITIAL POST THAT INCLUDES BOTH PART 1 AND PART 2.
