Cuba Spain US War 1895 1898 Discussion Question

Overview

This week’s module is based on the second half of Chapter 7 in Cuba: From Columbus to Castro and Beyond by Jaime Suchlicki; two journal articles by scholars George Auxier and Lawrence Tone; and twelve primary source PDFs that cover various aspects of what eventually became Cuba's successful War of Independence and the intervention of the United States in that conflict in 1898. As pointed out in the syllabus, the focus here is on a bottom-up analysis of events from the perspective of the Cubans themselves -- this week's readings reflect that approach. Nonetheless, US participation at the end of the independence conflict was crucial, so I have added OPTIONAL READINGS concentrating on the role of the United States in the latter part of the war for independence if you wish to have a more international focus for your analysis.

In formulating your Discussion Question for this week, you can once again examine any single or combination of ideological, political, economic and/or social factors. As this module deals with the conclusion of the prolonged struggle for independence, questions relating to military & international affairs in that struggle are relevant. If you choose to focus on the role of the United States (which is OK), include and cite material from the Optional Readings.

Remember to set up your actual question(s) by providing historical context and evidence from the assigned readings.
