Headings Required:

Identify the Option you have chosen as Option 1 or Option 2.

Then identify the section you are responding as described below in the instructions.

IMPORTANT: Do not submit a series of paragraphs without identifying what lettered and numbered section you are responding to.

This assists you in getting credited properly for you work. It also assists your instructor and the G.A. in grading your assignment efficiently.

Thank you for your help on this.

Topic: Two Options: Choose one only.

Option 1

Choose one film that we studied this semester and write a 4–5-page essay in prose responding to the following prompt. It contains 1-3. The total points are 25.

Prompt: Explain specifically why the film you selected had a strong impact on you in terms of the central debate and moral position championed in the film which were in contrast to those you held prior to the viewing of the film.  It is not required that the film changed your view. See number Option 1 #3.

  1. Your essay is required to have an introductory paragraph explaining the film you have chosen and why. Explain the ideas that challenged you without going into a great deal on scene detail in the introductory paragraph. The scene detail will be addressed in #2 and #3 below. (5 Points)

Then:

2. Identify and describe TWO specific scenes and extract from these the specific ideas being messaged that you view as challenging. (10 Points)

Tip: Here you are describing the IDEAS that the film is promoting in these scenes. These ideas refer to social-political ideas that have more than one side. The filmmaker is choosing a specific set of moral values. Focus on explaining the specific ideas. Please do not write a plot outline.

Use the heading 2 a) and 2 b)

2 a) Scene 1:  Identify and describe one scene and extract from this scene the specific ideas being messaged and that you view as challenging.

2 b) Scene 2: Identify and describe a second scene from the same film. Extract from this scene the specific ideas being messaged that you view as challenging. (You may disagree with the ideas and now agree, or you may have disagreed with the ideas presented and still disagree. Both are fine.  You will address your personal position in #3.)

Then:

3. Explain why these two specific scenes challenged your understanding of the subject and the values you previously/currently hold.  This can include deepening your understanding, broadening your sympathy or acceptance of others. If you did not change your view, that's also fine. Explain why.  (10 points)

Use the headings below:

3 a) Scene 1

3 b) Scene 2

Example: You might discuss the anti-war film Tangerines and how it challenged your views on war, soldiering, conflict resolution, cultural loyalties, and so on. It is entirely okay if you disagree with a message.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Option 2

Compare one theme that you saw repeated in two films we studied this semester and write a 4-5 page essay in prose. Compare how two different directors depicted the same theme in terms of story and or visual representation. Make an assessment of the directors’ success in conveying the message you believe was intended.

  1. Your essay needs an introductory paragraph. Identify the theme conveyed by both films and include in your introductory paragraph. This theme will be the same for both films. (5 Points)
  2. Compare how the theme was conveyed using specifics including details at a scene-level. Include two examples for each film. (10 Points – Each example 2 ½ Points) You are not looking for one film expressed by two different films. You are then identifying two scenes per film where the same theme was expressed at the story level for both films. Note cinematic analysis is under next part #3 that follows -- Use the headings 2 a) b) 2 c) 2 d) To further clarify:2 a) Film 1 First example of theme expressed in a scene2 b) Film 1 Second example of same theme expressed in a different scene2 c) Film 2 First example of same theme expressed in Film 2, not your first example in Film 22 d) Film 2 Second example of the same theme expressed in Film 2(Each is worth 2.5 points for a total of 10 points.)
  3. Evaluate which director’s cinematic methods were more successful. This could include story selection and/or visual representation. If both directors are equally strong in your view, explain. Provide two examples from each film. Four examples in total. (10 Points – Each example 2 ½ Points)

3 a) Film 1 First example

3 b) Film 1 Second example

3 c) Film 2 First example

3 d) Film 2 Second example
