Directed Writing (gone with the wind)

Overview

Gone with the Wind (You may either view the film OR read the novel)

Genre: Antebellum/Old South/Plantation South

Before watching the film (or reading the novel), review notes (attached) on the Antebellum/Old South and the appropriate links, as well as the directed writing prompt below. This will help you know what to look for as you watch or read. In writing your response use specific examples from the book OR film to illustrate and support your analysis. Your written response may be in either paragraph form, or, if you wish, simply a list of the examples supporting the prompt. For example, you might have to reference a specific scene or a few lines of dialogue. Give as many supporting examples as you can.

Each of the following four prompts below is worth 5 points for 20 points total. The assignment counts for 20% of the course grade.

1) "Land" was an important concept in the Antebellum South. What examples can you find to support this idea in Gone with the

Wind? (Approximately 250 words)

2) What examples can you find that best represent the antebellum culture and its customs? (Approximately 250 words)

3) Discuss (identify) the women and their various roles. A paragraph on each should do.

4) What examples are there of Theme 1, a Divided Culture? A nostalgic and romanticized South? (Approximately 250 words)
