Overview
We looked at a "Hot-Spot" in the Hawaiian Islands but there are also other areas in the world that have this usual volcanic type of setting. One of the areas that I visited is located in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Both areas are popular tourist stops to view the spectacular geologic settings.
Compare and contrast the hot-spot actively from Hawaii with the Yellowstone area.
What are similar and different in terms of the volcanic activity (geologic time - when was the last eruption and how often do they occur), what rock types seen in the area, volcano types, current elevation and potential hazards to humans today? Why are the rocks the same or different at the two volcanic settings? What causes the elevation at Yellowstone if it is a collapse caldera? How long (distance) are the hot spot trails for each volcanic settings and how do they differ in their current elevation and why?
