Plate Boundaries, Fault Motions, and Hotspots: Diagrams

Overview

Instructions: Please read!

This is the first part of the A4 assignment where you will have to provide diagrams, use the web to look up faults around the world and answer questions about their past seismicity.

You can draw on paper and upload a picture, draw on a tablet if you have one, or screenshot diagrams that you make on your computer (try using Google Slides or Jamboard). You must make your own diagrams; we will not accept diagrams copied from elsewhere (looking at you Google Images).

Submit your answers as a pdf (you can create a pdf by exporting from Word, Pages, Google Docs, PowerPoint).

If you are taking pictures from a phone to convert to a pdf, please ensure the final document is legible.

1.Hotspots

a. Name 2 hotspots around the world.

2. Normal Faults

a. Draw / Make a diagram of a Normal fault.

b. Name two major faults in two different countries/areas that are Normal faults. You should name the fault and state the country it is found in.

c. What size (magnitude) and when was the largest earthquake known to have occurred on one of the faults you mentioned in 2b in the last 500 years?

3. Reverse Faults

a. Draw / Make a diagram of a Reverse fault.

b. Name two major faults in two different countries/areas that are Reverse faults. You should name the fault and state the country it is found in.

c. What size (magnitude) and when was the largest earthquake known to have occurred on one of the faults you mentioned in 3b in the last 500 years?

4. Strike-Slip Faults

a. Draw / Make a diagram of a Strike-Slip fault.

b. Name two major faults in two different countries/areas that are Strike-Slip faults. You should name the fault and state the country it is found in.

c. What size (magnitude) and when was the largest earthquake known to have occurred on one of the faults you mentioned in 4b in the last 500 years?

5. Using the USGS website

We learned that there are 3 different types of plate boundaries.

Choose any type of plate boundary and take a picture of it.

The way to proceed is as follows:

--> Go to https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map (Links to an external site.) and use the website to find a plate boundary you wish to take a picture of.

In the settings tab (Gear icon on the top right), select '30 Days, Magnitude 2.5+ US' to show the seismicity from the last month. (Click 'continue anyway' if you see a warning message.)

      • Increase the time span via the "Search Earthquake Catalog" function in the menu (gear icon, upper right) if you don't find enough events.
      • You can enable the plate boundaries to be drawn by clicking the Layers button (upper right, in grey) and selecting "Plate Boundaries"
      • Capture/Screenshot an image of this area and insert it in your document, and answer the following questions:(a) Name the type of plate boundary shown in your figure and where it is located. (what country/countries are around it?)(b) how many earthquakes are displayed on your map(c) the magnitude of the largest event(d) the depth range of the earthquakes
