Questions
- a fault, be sure you can tell me what kind of fault it is;
- two examples of weathering processes, be sure you tell me what kind of processes they are;
- document evidence of mass wasting, and erosional events;
- document different sedimentary environments (continental, marine, and transitional);
- Locate within your area, an example(s) of the practical use of geology (bridges, skyscrapers, nuclear power plants, dams, etc., or anything that you feel represents the practical application of the geological science.These are all things that I feel that you can accomplish by going out in the field and identifying these things for yourself; your effort in obtaining this information is key in determining how well you do on the lab component of the course. It will be an intensive effort on your part, so you will want to get going right away.
You will use the lecture notes, and any other sources (Internet, library, bookstore, another geologist, etc.) to help you with this.
Again, as noted above, you are not required to travel great distances to complete this assignment. If you are able to travel to a national park, or to the coast, I strongly encourage it, but if that is not possible for you, that is okay, again, you will not be penalized for this. Reach out to me and we will come up with a workaround.
You can submit this as a power point, or as a word document. If doing a powerpoint expect to have a minimum of 10 slides, and if a word document, at least five pages of text. **Note** You are strongly encouraged to submit this as a power point, as the size limit is 10GB, Word Documents have smaller size limits. If size become an issue, revert to a power point presentation. I expect this to be comprised of both some background research, as well as your field work, observations, and documentation of what you observe in the field. Any background research you do should be cited in the body of your text (last name of the author(s), and the year of the sources publication using the APA formatting guidelines), and should include a references page (Lawler, 2024) (see links below)
