Gerontological Nursing

Overview

This is part two of a two-part interview project for the Gerontological Nursing course. For this project, you will continue with the community-dwelling older adult you chose in the first part of the project.

This portion of the interview should take approximately two hours, and then you will write up your findings to submit. Please do not audio or video record any of the interviews. You may take handwritten or typed notes and will complete the tools.

For the client assessment interview, you will complete five assessment tools and a plan of care. Three of the assessment tools (SPICES, Mini-Cog, and Beers Criteria) are required below:

On the Beers Criteria:

  • Review the article and state if there are any medications your client is taking that are on the list and why the criteria states they should not be taking that particular medication.
  • See if maybe they are taking the medication because it's the only med that worked.
  • See if any teaching or education has been done regarding that particular med. If your client does not take any med on the list, then just simply state this in your narrative. If you do any education regarding the medication to your client, then state this in the narrative as well.

You will choose the remaining two assessment tools based on the needs of your client. Here are some possibilities

After completing the five assessments with your client, you will complete the following tasks:

  • Write a brief synopsis (1 paragraph for each tool used) of what you find and then develop a written plan of care for your client.
  • This plan of care must include at least 10 nursing interventions with rationales that meet the needs of your specific client (at least 2 of these interventions must be teaching interventions), as well as 2 community referrals you would make for your client.
  • In conclusion, you will write both a personal and interviewee reflection of the entire experience. Please refer to the rubric below to guide your writing.
  • Your submission should be in APA format with a title page and references (if any). Do not submit the actual assessments. The content of your paper should not exceed 5 pages.
