Nurses are faced with many multifaceted issues throughout the profession of nursing, regardless of the type of health care organization in which they are employed. Nurse leaders must understand and analyze the complexities of current issues and draw on leadership and management skills to navigate sensitive situations, considering the social, ethical, cultural, and financial aspects of plausible solutions.
After selecting one of the topics listed below, develop a PowerPoint presentation written in APA format with type-written speaker notes. The grading rubric and template are located within this assignment folder. Note: the template is not intended to be all-inclusive. Refer to the grading rubric for details. The presentation should be submitted as a .pptx file. Refer to the syllabus for late submission policy.

- Nurse-Patient Ratios - Discuss the impact of nurse-patient ratios on the quality of care and patient safety. Address how the level of education, training, and experience of the registered nurse makes a difference in safe staffing levels. How can nurse leaders support the bedside nurse?
- Impaired Nurses - Prescription Drug Addiction - Should nurses undergo mandatory drug testing? What is the Texas Board of Nursing's stance on drug and alcohol abuse among APRNs, RNs, and LVNs? How would you manage an impaired nurse working on your nursing unit?
- Nurse Retention - High turnover rates of new nurses and keeping experienced qualified nursing staff are constant challenges to maintain quality patient care and appropriate staffing. Examine and analyze the factors affecting this issue, and a plan to manage the situation.
- Workplace hazards - Nurses face many potential hazards in the workplace, from blood-borne pathogens, exposure to colds and the flu, and especially the risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus. Explore these hazards and ways nurse leaders manage these situations.
- Workplace Violence - Examine this significant problem in nursing and the impact on the profession. (Chapter 21 provides excellent information related to this topic; TJC, OSHA, and ANA). As a nurse leader, outline a plan for combating workplace violence.
- Burnout and Compassion Fatigue - With nurses working long hours, being short-staffed, and getting called in for extras shifts, it's no wonder that many are experiencing extreme stress, burnout, and possibly compassion fatigue. Examine these issues and their impact on the profession, and offer a solution to improve the work environment and promote job satisfaction.
