As we learned this week, one of the best ways to adequately power a study is to enroll a large number of subjects (i.e. use a large sample size). But that's not always feasible for one reason or another - they might be studying a rare disease so there aren't many patients to draw from, for instance, or they may have only had funding to enroll patients at one center, thus limiting their pool of potential subjects. It can often require a lot of effort to enroll enough subjects to adequately power a study, and these constraints may cause studies to be prolonged to allow more time for enrollment, or they may simply fail to meet the required minimum to reach their desired power. So why go to all this effort? That's what I want you to consider this week.

Instructions - Initial Post

  1. Discuss the importance of statistical power in clinical research. Explore why it is essential to have adequate power to detect meaningful effects and make reliable conclusions from study findings. Some guiding questions to consider are...
    • What are some reasons why researchers should bother with performing a power analysis before choosing a sample size?
    • Conversely, what are some reasons why they shouldn't?
    • How can researchers balance the need for adequate statistical power with practical constraints, such as limited resources or time?
    • How does statistical power impact the generalizability of study findings?
  2. Write 2-3 paragraphs with your thoughts.
