Ideal job

Overview

Entering the mental health field as a new provider can be challenging. Whether this is your first transition from bedside nursing to provider, or an experienced provider switching into mental health. Discuss the following items in your post:

  1. What are your expectations from your employer to help with your transition?
    For example:
    1. How long of an orientation period do you expect?
    2. How long do you expect your appointments to be (if outpatient) or patients on your rounding list (if working inpatient)?
    3. What type of training do you expect?
  2. What are your fears or concerns related to either your job search or starting a new career?
  3. What are some elements of your job search that are non-negotiable? Which ones are flexible? What is your area's industry standard (if known)
    1. On-call expectations, if applicable: pay, how often, responsibilities
    2. Vacation coverage, continuing education time/financial compensation
    3. Paying for DEA license or any other certifications required by your employer
    4. Telehealth, in person, or blend of appointment types
    5. Billing services: is this provided? What are your responsibilities?
    6. Do you require a collaborative physician? Is this provided?
    7. What are your employer's expectations or culture for prescribing controlled substances?
  4. What self-care strategies do you already have in place or plan to implement to avoid burnout?
