The Landscape of Health Communication

Purpose

These discussions are designed with a few objectives in mind. First, they provide you with an opportunity to think more deeply about the content we're covering. Having you put your thoughts to paper (er, keyboard?) is a great way to process the new information. Second, you are likely to learn a lot from each other in this context. Chances are good that some of your group-mates will have differing ideas or viewpoints from yours, and that creates a fantastic opportunity for learning. And finally, these discussions are an opportunity to practice professional written communication, instead of just learning about it theoretically.

Instructions - Initial Post

1.Choose a topic. Consider what insight you've gained from this week's learning material, and choose something that you feel strongly about or that strikes you as interesting or relevant in some way. Guiding questions might include:

oHave you ever faced challenges while navigating the healthcare system? If so, share your experiences and suggest potential improvements to enhance the patient experience within the system.

oWhen it comes to managed care, do you see it as primarily beneficial or problematic? What are the key advantages and disadvantages that matter most to you, and if given the opportunity to enhance managed care, what changes would you propose?

oDo you support the concept of universal healthcare coverage, or do you have reservations? What factors influence your stance on this issue?

oOther potential ideas could include an assessment of the current status of health care delivery in the United States, a thoughtful consideration of how the Affordable Care Act ("ObamaCare") has changed the landscape for access to healthcare, or the impact of Medicare and the rules surrounding Medicare, just to name a few.

2.Find a relevant source of information on this topic, preferably from a peer-reviewed journal. Be prepared to reference this source during your initial post - use it as evidence to back what you have to say.

3.Write an initial post informing readers about your topic. Remember that this is meant to be a discussion, so try to write in such a way as to invite conversation around the topic. It can be helpful to think of this initial post like one on a professional discussion forum, full of respected peers (perhaps one of the forums that the AARC hosts, for example).

oMinimum length: 250 words

oRequirements: Include a minimum of one (1) reference and one (1) in-text citation, formatted according to APA 7th edition
