Capstone Paper Part II Overview
The Capstone Paper provides students an opportunity to actively integrate and apply concepts they have learned to the development and analysis of a project that addresses a problem ori ssue encountered within the student's profession, institutions, or organization. The student will incorporate clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice using a systematic process for the ultimate goal of comprehensive, safe patient care. Each individual assignment in the synthesis course will build to a larger project tue near the end of the course. In Part II, the student will discuss the methods, which has several parts (aim, design, sample, setting, intervention, and implementation), analysis, and conclusion.
Components of Part II - Methods
AimHere you will explain the objective (overall goal) of your project. What research topic or question or problem does the project intend to address and why? In other words, what do you wish to find out, improve, or change through this project?
Include a brief statement of the population or setting you’re focusing on, the intervention (briefly stated) or change you wish to introduce (education + visual cues for hand hygiene), and the outcome you intend to observe.
DesignPolit and Beck (2022) indicate the research design of your proposed research project provides a plan for obtaining answers to the research question that you posed on the fillable PICO(T) form that you submitted in early June. Design options include:
Quasi-experimental pretest-post test
Quasi-experimental time series
Correlational
Qualitative (phenomenological, grounded theory, or ethnographic) design?
A good resource for these types of designs is the NURS 3351 (Nursing Research) textbook.
Discuss what makes the design that you selected appropriate for your research question. For example, if you want to determine the lived experience of partners of women who had a difficult birth, then you will take a phenomenological approach, because it helps us understand a person’s everyday life experiences (Polit & Beck, 2022). On the other hand, an example of a quasi-experimental design is described with this PICO(T) question, “In staff working in a long-term care facility, how does an educational session combined with visual reminders, compared to no intervention, affect hand hygiene compliance over a 4-week period?” This is an example of a quasi-experimental design because there is an intervention and a comparison group, and we will measure the outcome (compliance) before and after the intervention. Participants will not be randomly assigned. If they were randomly assigned, we would then have an experimental design.
SampleHere, you will include a description of the sample’s main characteristics in one or two paragraphs.
Describe the similarities as well as the differences in the population.
Describe the criteria for inclusion and exclusion.
If you are researching the use of a birthing ball for the degree of pain relief during labor, It would make sense that the birth partner is excluded from the study. In this case, you cannot necessarily say that men are excluded because birth partners may also be female.
Include citations as necessary.
