Reflect and provide substantive responses

Overview

Working at a teaching hospital, there have been a few times where I have had issues with healthcare delivery. I can remember this one situation where I received a new admission from the ER who was septic. Once the patient got to our medical-surgical floor, I knew immediately that he needed a higher level of care. I tried to get the resident to come down and lay eyes on this patient and hear concerns from the family. I ended up calling a rapid response code due to this healthcare delivery issue and the patient was transferred to the ICU for a few days and eventually safely discharged. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing and would do it all over again if I had to. Relating it to Steve Spears' video on how Clinicians can improve their process, I know that they go through the process but in this situation, something was going wrong, and the patient was truly going septic. (IHI, 2014) I got to know this resident very well after this situation. This situation also is an example of why sepsis workup in the ER is crucial and can be life-threatening if untreated upon first contact when a patient comes in to be treated. According to Gavelli et al (2021), speaks about the process with early detection of sepsis and treatment is essential for an emergency physician to reduce the mortality of septic patients.
