You are the director of a large respiratory therapy department in a large, multihospital-based health system. The department has 100 total RT's, and includes 7 professional/management positions (including yours), and you currently have seven professional/management staff members and one support staff member who report directly to you. Your office has responsibility for managing and updating the department's annual strategic planning process, including managing ancillary departments and internal operations (e.g., patient volumes and projections (workloads), scheduling, department budget, employee training, supply and equipment etc.).

You are engaged in the process of filling a newly approved department manager position that reports to you, which will have a leadership role in managing the supervisors and the day to day of the department. Currently, there are three shift supervisors who report to you and will work with this department manager. Here are a list of the final candidates:

  1. Steve - white male, current daytime supervisor (internal candidate), 10 years in the position, BS in Healthcare Management, baby boomer generation, $60,000/year salary (promotion to department manager is a 10% increase in pay).
  2. Jamie - white female, current evening supervisor (internal candidate), 5 years in the position, BS in Respiratory Therapy, generation Xer, $52,000/year salary (promotion to department manager is a 10% increase in pay).
  3. Angela - African-American female, external candidate, 5 years experience as a respiratory therapy department director, 5 years experience as an RT supervisor, MHA degree, generation Xer, $75,000 minimum salary requirement.

Of all the candidates you are considering, one has the appropriate education and significant experience in department management in other healthcare settings and is the best fit for the job. However, her salary demand for the job is $9,000 more than the salary range for the position allows.

Use your knowledge of human resources management, the role of the line manager in the recruitment and supervision of staff, and the role of the human resources department staff to effectively address this situation and to respond to the following questions.

Discussion/Prompted Questions

  1. How do you convince your boss and the human resources department that this is the candidate you want to fill the job?
  2. What steps would you undertake to get the salary approved?
  3. Define diversity and how it makes a stronger team and can lead to improved performance.
  4. What problems does this situation present for you, and how can you effectively address each problem?
  5. What options do you have if the salary remains a “sticking point”?
