Purpose
Providing our patients with information to enable them to make positive choices in their own health care is a vital role of the respiratory therapist. In this motivational interview, you will converse with a live "patient" (can be a friend, family member, colleague, etc. - it just needs to be another person) to practice these skills.
For this assignment, you will practice motivational interviewing as a means of participating in transactional communication with a fictitious COPD patient. This will help you in future patient interactions. You will also be expected to make videos for future classes within this program (and potentially in future professional capacities, too), and practicing this skill will help to develop both proficiency and confidence.
Instructions
Produce a 3-5 minute video where you...
- Enlist the help of another individual (family member, friend, colleague) to play the part of a COPD patient who actively smokes cigarettes. Pretend that you are seeing this person right before they discharge home after hospitalization for a COPD exacerbation.
- Engage in motivational interviewing with your "patient" to provide information and support for smoking cessation.
