Overview
Choose a topic. Reflect on the readings in du Pré & Overton (2023) and review the Health and Human Services website on the Social Determinants of Heath, and take one consideration or tool discussed and expand on how you might apply this in your clinical practice. Consider the many ways we are diverse, such as those listed below, and then describe ways to develop cultural competence in these areas and apply it to one's daily practice.
- Socioeconomic status
- Health literacy
- Gender identities
- Race and ethnicity
- Language differences
- Disabilities
- Age
2. Find a relevant source of information on this topic, preferably from a peer-reviewed journal. Be prepared to reference this source during your initial post - use it as evidence to back what you have to say.
3. Write an initial post informing readers about your topic. Remember that this is meant to be a discussion, so write in such a way as to invite conversation around the topic. It can be helpful to think of this initial post like one on a professional discussion forum (perhaps one of the forums that the AARC hosts, for example), full of respected peers.
