Chapter 12
Required:
- The following questions are commonly asked by children at the ages indicated. How would you respond to each question? Remember that your responses have to be age-appropriate. Use material from the text to support your responses.
- 2-4 year olds: Where do babies come from? Why is daddy’s penis so much bigger than mine?
- 5-6 year olds: Why does my penis get hard sometimes? What are breasts for?
- 8-9 year olds: Did you and Dad do that (regarding intercourse to have children)? Why do people have sex if they don’t want any more babies?
- Adolescents: Your 13-year old son has a girlfriend and you suspect that they may become sexually active. What would you say to him? What would you say to your 13-year old daughter if she had a boyfriend and you suspected that they may become sexually active?
Choose any two questions:
- What information do you wish you had about sex as an adolescent? What would be different if you knew back then what you knew now? Refer to both the text and the Teen Dreams video for framing your discussion.
- How would you respond as a parent if your adolescent “came out” to you as being gay or lesbian or trans?
- Make a list of characteristics of sexually healthy adolescents. Divide these characteristics into physical, social, and cognitive categories. How would you use the list you made to encourage teens to be sexually healthy?
- Define comprehensive sexuality education. How does it differ from traditional sex education?
Chapter 13
Required:
- What factors contribute to a sustainable relationship? Read at least one student discussion and comment about any differences between yours and theirs.
Choose any one question:

- Define the different marital styles found in the world including monogamy, polygamy, polyandry, non-monogamy, and polyamory. Is “pair-bonding” the most efficient way to raise a family?
- Describe the changes in laws and attitudes about same-sex marriage in the United States.
- What are the pros and cons of each of the following: staying single, cohabiting, marriage?
