Discussion - Staffing Issues
As everyone knows, there are growing staffing shortages of licensed respiratory therapists and other skilled healthcare workers across the country. Many departments have lost most or many of their regular full-time staff due to a myriad of reasons many of which are based around the COVID pandemic. In an "editorial" writing position, discuss the impacts you have experienced in your individual departments and how this could have longer-lasting effects going forward. Some items to give some thought to in this discussion:
- What were the retention practices in place before extreme shortages took place? Were there any?
- Were managers given the power to make staffing decisions? If not, who controlled this?
- Do you think contract positions are here to stay? Why?
- Ideas about solutions that you have seen put in place or that you have yourself to combat these issues?
