Task 3: Ethics and Application of Punishment in Behavioral Reduction
Objective:
Analyze the implementation of time out or cost of response, evaluating its effectiveness and ethical considerations in behavioral reduction.
Description:
Next, a case is presented in which a behavioral reduction strategy based on time off or the cost of response was implemented. Your task will be to analyze the effectiveness of the intervention and reflect on its ethical application.
Case: Intervention in Luis' Aggressive Behavior
Luis is a 10-year-old boy with a severe intellectual disability who attends a special education class with 12 other children. The teacher and his assistant manage the group and conduct individual sessions with the students.
Luis presents an aggressive behavior: he pulls his classmates' hair frequently. To manage this behavior, the teacher has implemented a time-out procedure, where every time Luis pulls his hair, he is taken to a chair in a corner of the classroom for 5 minutes without access to toys or interaction with his classmates.
After several weeks of intervention, Luis' behavior has not decreased significantly. It is observed that, although the teacher and his assistant apply time outside consistently, they rarely praise students or provide positive reinforcements when they exhibit appropriate behaviors.
The principal of the school requests a treatment evaluation to determine if the behavioral reduction strategy is being effective or if adjustments are needed.
