Compose an essay, in at least 1500 words, analyzing a dual mode of ventilation of your choice. Identify its name, control variables, targeting schemes, and appropriate use by patient population or patient condition. Reference material may include information provided by the vendor, literature, or a published protocol at your institution. Complete and submit the assignment by 23:59 EST Sunday.
Additional Resources
1. I’m including an article that does a good job comparing and contrasting ASV, APV (adaptive pressure ventilation) and PSV (pressure support ventilation) in the face on increased ventilatory demand. Jabor and co did a small (n=14) cross-over study and compared the 3 modes using the same ventilators. I think it will be helpful in exploring those three different modes. See link below.
2. Branson wrote an older RC Journal Article that explores the “newer” (pub. 2004) modes of ventilation with sections on Dual-Control Modes, Dual-Control Within a breath, Dual-Control Breath-to-Breath, Pressure Limited, Flow-cycled ventilation, Dual-control, breath-to-breath, pressure-limited, time cycled ventilation, and many others. I think that article will provide ideas on modes to look into as well as offer various studies for each mode.
3. If you choose to research ASV, (which is an option) Hamilton Medical has a great learning resource. E-learning (hamilton-medical.com)Links to an external site. You are able to create a free account and within their learning college there is a 40min module that explains ASV, there are also additional resources on mechanical ventilation, additional modes, and Hamilton Vents.
