Week 5 Discussion: 72-Hour Go-Bag

Week 5 Discussion Board Thread with 72 Hour Go Bag Photo Assignment has 4 part. Be sure to address all 4 part as indicated below.

One of the biggest challenges in personal disaster management is accurately assessing how well our household is prepared should we have little or no access to utilities, shelter, or food.

Part I Initial Discussion Board Prompt: Scenario and Personal Assessment

For this week’s discussion, we would like you to take a good hard look at what supplies and equipment you have on hand as of Monday of Week 5 and answer the following prompts:

Scenario:

You are given two hours to evacuate and move to a safe area 100 miles away. Create a list of supplies and equipment you currently have available. Be honest! Assume that you and your family cannot expect any outside support for at least three days.

  1. Review the lists available on the following web sites.

American Red Cross - How to Prepare for EmergenciesLinks to an external site.

Ready.govLinks to an external site.

Ready.gov FEMA Emergency Supply ChecklistLinks to an external site.

  1. After reviewing the examples on the sites, give yourself a grade for your current level of preparedness using the following grading scale:

Thoroughly Prepared. My family and I could live off the grid not only for three days, but for three weeks! We are ready to grab our supplies and hit the road almost immediately. If needed, we can be a resource for others in the community needing help. We are the poster children for disaster preparedness.

Well Prepared. My family and I have most of the essential items needed should we have to fend for ourselves for three days. The supplies are organized, up-to-date, and easily gathered for the 100-mile trip. We have discussed our plans and understand where we will meet should we get separated.

Prepared. We have the bare minimum when it comes to supplies. We will have food and water, but it will need to be rationed. Most of the items are easy to find and pack, but it may take the full two hours. Our family has discussed plans in the past but have never practiced.

Poorly Prepared. We have a few items available and what we do have will need to be gathered in a hurry. For the next three days we will be hungry, thirsty, cold, and maybe wet. We may not even be able to get 100 miles away.

Not prepared. We will be as helpless as kittens. Chances are we will leave our home with nothing but the clothes on our backs. We now wish we had paid attention in NURS 431!

Part II Initial Discussion Board Prompt Instructions

  1. Thoroughly explain the rationale behind the grade you have given yourself and your family. Create a plan to improve your grade. Be specific.
    • What is the grade you have given yourself and your family?
    • What will you need first?
    • What barriers do you anticipate that may keep you from achieving your goal?
    • When can you realistically complete your plan?
    • Describe your family plan when you must report to work during a disaster.
  2. Using a minimum of 200 words, discuss your improvement plan and family plan for reporting to work during a disaster.
  3. Support your plan with evidence from scholarly sources other than the sites above.
  4. APA 7th is required (including references and in-text citations)
