PURPOSE: Seeking up-to-date, relevant information pertaining to a disease process

Overview

PURPOSE: Seeking up-to-date, relevant information pertaining to a disease process is a key tenet of continuing education for medical professionals. Applying concepts from high-quality research leads to evidence-based practice. Additionally, these new insights can impact the ability of the practitioner to convey/educate key components of disease processes to both patients and colleagues.

Skills: This assignment allows you to practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course and in the degree advancement program (DAP).

Writing in the Profession Students will demonstrate the ability to write effectively in the profession. Elements would include the ability to organize an argument, support the argument with high-quality relevant evidence, deliver it with good sentence structure and grammar, and cite and reference appropriately.

Critical Inquiry/ Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Students will demonstrate the ability to formulate a clinical question, search the medical literature, and assess the collected literature for quality, relevance, and limitations.

Teaching Patients and Healthcare Professionals: Students will demonstrate the ability to educate patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.

Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in Respiratory Therapy:

1.The entire clinical picture or presentation of a particular disease process that encompasses symptom recognition, diagnosis, disease management, patient education, and follow-up care and the impact these strategies can have on the patient’s overall outcome.

TASK: Students will choose a disease affecting the cardiopulmonary system to then design a concept map with a corresponding narrative further explaining the disease.

1.Mapping: The concept map should include information pertaining to the pathophysiology, management, and patient outcomes related to the disease process. This visual representation should be accurate and concise. Students will create a visual diagram of the key concepts and how they are connected. This can be achieved by inserting text boxes and lines through your Word document software. Connections should demonstrate the relationships between and among the concepts. This should fit on a single page and be the first page of the document.

2.Narrative: Write a 2 to 3-page (roughly five-paragraph essay) paper in APA format addressing the key concepts of the disease chosen. Start writing this on page 2 of your document after your map. Students should include five peer-reviewed sources (within the last 5 years) to gain information about the key concepts of the disease. The narrative should include the following components:

Introduction to the disease process

1.Briefly present the hallmark characterizations and overview of the disease

2.Identify the incidence and prevalence rate of the disease

3.Distinguish the patient population for which the disease primarily affects

Discussion on pathophysiology

1.Identify the causes and/or risk factors for developing the disease

2.Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms in which patients may present

3.Thoroughly describe the bodily processes that are experienced

Discussion on the management of the condition

1.Pharmacotherapy

2.Airway Related Care

3.Mechanical Ventilation

4.Surgical options

5.Special considerations

Describe the recommended diagnostic evaluation of the disease

1.Identify the evidence-based treatment options for the disease, as applicable

2.Explain any continued monitoring that should take place

Discussion of patient outcomes

1.Identify goals of care (acuity versus chronicity)

2.Known mortality and morbidity rates associated with the disease

3.Role of patient education and disease navigation on outcomes

Conclusion of your findings

1.Concisely summarize the major findings of your research

2.Identify any gaps in knowledge pertaining to the disease

3.Address potential areas of future research on the disease

APA Reference list

1.Include at least five peer-reviewed sources within the last five years

2.If a source is used that is outside of the 5-year window, it must be in addition to the more recent literature

3.The same five sources can be used for both the concept map diagram and the essay portion of the assignment

Criteria for Success:

Please submit the completed assignment as a Word document

Reflects guidelines for citing and referencing per the APA Manual 7th edition.
