you will need to write a 1.5-to-2-page double-spaced paper (double spaced, 12 pt font, 1-inch margins) addressing a particular set of questions from the material we have been covering.
We will be grading for depth of thought, coverage of the material that is referred to in the question (that is, can we tell from your paper that you read/watched/listened to the material and gave some thought to it when answering the question—this includes proper referencing), as well as writing quality that includes proper grammar, correct spelling, etc.
This is a response essay so you will be using ONLY class materials to craft this essay—you are responding to the materials. You should specifically refer to the various week’s material (whether lecture, reading, video, or additional reading specific to the assignment and to cite it properly) in your paper; that way it will be clear to us that you read/watched the materials.
There are multiple questions in the assignment; make sure you’re responding to all of them in your paper. Please submit your essay as a WORD document with your name on it and the course number, date and essay number.
Title your essay (not just Essay 1).
A reference list is not part of the page limit—it can be an additional page.
Submit these on time—1 point off for each day these are late.
Essay Rubric
6 points- Body of paper; depth of thought, relevant to the topic of the assignment.
2 points- Quality of Writing (Clarity, logical flow of ideas, no typos or grammar errors)
2 points – Reference page and in-text referencing—references are to be in APA style in-text and in the reference list at the end of your paper (NO MLA or Numbered systems please). The reference page is not part of the 1.5- 2 pages; it is page 3 of your paper. You need to use at least 3 different references from our class materials for your paper. No outside references are to be used. You do not have to put the whole paper in APA style; just do the references in APA style.
You will lose points if your paper does not reach the page limit (less than 1.5 pages) but you will not be penalized for going over 2 pages. However, if you do go over 2 pages make sure you are not repeating yourself or adding fluff. And try not to write us a book--it should still remain a relatively short paper.
9 points total per essay.
A word about plagiarism: Plagiarism is claiming someone else’s work as your own. It is a form of stealing. In my experience, the most common way that students plagiarize is by copying and pasting from a text they find online. Never, never do this. Even if you cite the source that you copied and pasted from, it is still plagiarizing. (If you include the text as an exact quote, use quotation marks, and cite the source appropriately, that is not plagiarizing – BUT avoid use of exact quotes in your essays because the papers are short and I want them to be in your own words. Instead of copying and pasting the text, you need to restate the ideas presented in the text in your own words, and then cite the source appropriately. When in doubt, always cite! Plagiarizing will result in, at minimum, a 0 on the assignment, and possibly a failing grade in the course and a report to the Office of Academic Integrity.
Having AI generate your paper is a form of plagiarism and will result in the same penalty—at least a 0 on the assignment—it does not do you any favors as it robs you of the chance to fully engage with course materials, to synthesize course materials, examine concepts and craft a well-written and well thought out essay. Writing skills are valuable in graduate school, professional school and most careers. Critical thinking is also a valuable skill to develop that will serve you well.

The first response paper is about Module One - Women's health and connections to women’s status, governmental policies and health access. This question comes from the articles and PowerPoint presentations for our first week.
I would like you to use what you’ve learned from Week 1’s materials to integrate these pieces of information by writing at least 1 paragraph of each of these 4 questions. Be sure to give examples from our materials in this module--cite articles and PowerPoint Lectures in APA style with in-text references when you use material and then in a reference list at the end of your paper. Cover each of these 4 points below in your paper:
- How is women’s status related to women’s health nationally?
- How do we in SC rank in women’s status, and how is this related to women’s health in our state of SC?
- What policies do you recommend for improving women’s status and health nationally and in our state?
- What strategies do you recommend to put these policies into place in the state of South Carolina?
